Jesus Comforts Two Disciples

A walk together on the road to Emmaus

On the day Jesus was resurrected, two disciples were walking from Jerusalem to a town called Emmaus. They were followers of Jesus, and they were sad. They were talking with each other about Jesus’s death and the other things that had happened in the past few days.

Luke 24:13–14

Jesus appears and walks with the disciples. The disciples don’t know that it’s Jesus.

While they walked, Jesus came and walked with them, but they didn’t know it was Jesus. He asked what they were talking about and why they were sad.

Luke 24:15–17

The disciples explain that Jesus had died.

They were surprised He didn’t know what had happened. They told Him about Jesus. They thought He would be their Savior, but He had died.

Luke 24:18–21

The disciples say that Jesus’s body is gone from the tomb.

They also said that some women had been to His tomb, but Jesus’s body was gone. Angels had told the women that Jesus was alive.

Luke 24:21–24

Jesus teaches the disciples.

Jesus then taught them what the scriptures said about the Savior. He said the prophets had taught that the Savior would die and rise again.

Luke 24:25–27

Jesus blesses bread and gives it to the disciples.

When they got to Emmaus, it was getting late. The two disciples invited Jesus to stay with them. Jesus sat down to eat with them. He took bread, blessed it, and gave it to the disciples. At that moment, they knew it was Jesus. Suddenly He disappeared.

Luke 24:29–31

The disciples talk about their experiences with Jesus.

The two disciples talked about how warm they felt in their hearts while Jesus was teaching them from the scriptures. They hurried back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples that they had seen Jesus.
