Jesus Teaches the Sermon on the Mount
Helping us become more like our Heavenly Father
Jesus and His disciples went to a mountain near the Sea of Galilee. There Jesus taught them how we can be happy and become more like our Heavenly Father.
Jesus taught that people are blessed and happy when they are humble, are pure in heart, and try to do what’s right. People who forgive others can be forgiven. People who make peace will be called the children of God.
Jesus said that His disciples are a light for the world—like a city on a hill that everyone can see. We shouldn’t hide our light.
When we follow Jesus, we are like a candle that gives light to everyone in the room. Our good works can help people believe in Heavenly Father.
Jesus said that we should love everyone—even people who do not love us. We should pray for them. Jesus taught that we should try to be like our Heavenly Father. He taught that when we help people, we don’t have to tell everyone what we did. God sees the good things we do, and He will bless us.
Matthew 5:38–48; Matthew 6:1–4
When we pray, we shouldn’t worry about what other people think about us. We shouldn’t say the same words every time if we really don’t mean them. We should speak from our hearts. Heavenly Father hears our prayers and knows what we need. Even when no one else can hear us, He will.
Jesus taught that we should not think we are better than other people. We should remember that we all have challenges. Instead of judging others, we should think about how we can do better. We should treat people the way we want to be treated.
Jesus then told a story about a foolish man who built his house on sand and a wise man who built his house on a rock. When a rainstorm came, the house on the sand fell down, and the house on the rock stayed standing. Jesus said if we hear His teachings and follow them, we are like the wise man.
