Walking on the Water

Faith overcomes fear

Jesus wanted some time alone to pray. He sent His disciples in a boat to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus went to pray on a mountain.

Matthew 14:22–23

The Apostles are caught in a storm.

That night, the wind was strong, and the waves were big. Jesus’s disciples worked hard all night trying to get the boat to the other side of the sea.

Matthew 14:24–25

The Apostles see Jesus walking toward them on the water.

When the night was almost over, the disciples saw someone walking toward them on the water. They thought it was a ghost, and they were afraid. It wasn’t a ghost; it was Jesus! He called to them, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”

Matthew 14:25–27

Jesus invites Peter to come to Him on the water.

Peter asked Jesus to invite him to come to Him on the water. Jesus said, “Come!” Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water, just like Jesus!

Matthew 14:28–29

Peter becomes frightened and starts to sink.

But when Peter saw the strong wind and big waves, he was frightened. He started to sink into the water. He called out to Jesus, “Lord, save me.”

Matthew 14:30

Jesus reaches out to Peter.

Jesus reached out and caught Peter. He asked Peter why he doubted instead of trusting Him more.

Matthew 14:31

Jesus and Peter get back in the boat.

When Jesus and Peter got back in the boat, the wind stopped. The disciples were amazed by what had happened. They knew that Jesus was truly the Son of God, and they worshipped him.
