He Is Risen

Jesus Christ overcomes death for all

Jesus’s disciples leave His tomb.

Jesus’s disciples put His body in the tomb. They wanted to do more to take care of His body, but it was almost the Sabbath. They planned to come back after the Sabbath to finish.

Luke 23:52–56

Mary Magdalene and others return to the tomb.

Early in the morning on the third day after Jesus’s death, Mary Magdalene and others went to the tomb.

Luke 24:1; John 20:1

Jesus’s body is not in the tomb.

When they arrived, they saw that the stone covering the tomb had been rolled away. They went in the tomb, and Jesus’s body wasn’t there.

Luke 24:2–3; John 20:1

Mary tells Peter and John that someone has taken Jesus’s body.

Mary ran to tell Peter and John that someone had taken Jesus’s body away. Peter and John ran to the tomb.

John 20:2–4

Peter and John see that Jesus’s body is not in the tomb.

When they got to the tomb, Peter and John went inside. They saw that Jesus’s body was gone. The cloth that He had been wrapped in was still there.

John 20:5–7

Mary sees two angels in the tomb.

Peter and John went home, but Mary stayed by the tomb, crying. She looked in the tomb and saw two angels. They asked her why she was crying. She said someone had taken Jesus’s body, and she didn’t know where it was.

John 20:11–13

Jesus asks Mary why she is weeping.

Then Jesus came, but Mary didn’t know it was Him. Jesus asked her, “Woman, why weepest thou?” Mary thought He was the gardener. She asked Him if He knew where Jesus’s body was.

John 20:14–15

Mary turns around and sees Jesus.

Jesus said, “Mary.” She turned around. Now she knew that it was Jesus! She said to Him, “Master.” Jesus asked her to tell the other disciples that He needed to go to His Heavenly Father. Mary found the other disciples and told them that she had seen Jesus and He was alive again!

John 20:16–18

Jesus appears and speaks to His Apostles.

That evening, many of the Apostles were together. They shut the doors, afraid that the leaders of the Jews might try to find them. Suddenly, they saw Jesus standing among them. At first they were afraid. They thought He was a spirit. Jesus said, “Peace be unto you.”

Luke 24:33–38; John 20:19

One of the Apostles touches Jesus’s hand.

Jesus invited the Apostles to touch His hands and feet. He wanted them to know that He had a body, not just a spirit. He even ate fish and honeycomb with them. The disciples were so happy to see Him!

Luke 24:39–44; John 20:20

Jesus teaches about His death and Resurrection.

Then Jesus helped His Apostles understand the scriptures that taught about His death and Resurrection. He wanted them to teach everyone that because of Him, they could repent and be forgiven. The Apostles would be His witnesses.

Luke 24:44–48

Thomas talks with two other Apostles.

The Apostle Thomas wasn’t there when Jesus came. He said he wouldn’t believe that Jesus was alive unless he could see the nail prints in His hands.

John 20:24–25

Jesus appears again.

Eight days later, the disciples were gathered together. Jesus appeared again. This time Thomas was there.

John 20:26

Thomas kneels before Jesus.

Jesus invited Thomas to touch the wounds in His hands and side. He told Thomas, “Be not faithless, but believing.” Thomas said, “My Lord and my God.” Now Thomas believed that Jesus was resurrected. Jesus said that people are blessed when they believe, even if they haven’t seen Him.
