Jesus Is Arrested
Judging the Son of God
After Jesus finished praying and suffering in Gethsemane, Judas arrived with a large group of Jewish guards. Judas was one of the Apostles. He knew that Jesus often went to this garden. The Jewish leaders had paid Judas to help them find Jesus so they could take Him away.
As the guards tried to take Jesus away, Peter pulled out a sword. He cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant.
Jesus told Peter to put his sword away. Jesus said that He needed to do what His Father wanted.
Jesus touched the servant’s ear and healed it.
The guards took Jesus to the house of the high priest. Other Jewish leaders were there too. They wanted to find a reason to have Jesus put to death. They brought people in to tell lies about Him.
Finally, the high priest asked Jesus if He was the Son of God. Jesus said, “I am.”
This made the high priest and the other leaders angry. They hit Jesus, spit on Him, and made fun of Him. They agreed that He should be killed.
While Jesus was in the high priest’s house, Peter waited outside. He sat by a fire to get warm. Three times, people said they recognized Peter as one of Jesus’s disciples. But each time, Peter said he did not know Jesus.
Then the rooster crowed, and Peter remembered what Jesus had said: that Peter would deny Him three times. Peter walked away crying.
The Jewish leaders took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor. A crowd of people came too. The leaders wanted Pilate to put Jesus to death. They told Pilate that Jesus called Himself the king of the Jews.
Mark 15:1–3; Luke 23:2; John 18:28–31
Pilate asked Jesus if He was the king of the Jews. Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world.” He explained that He came to the world to teach people the truth.
Pilate said that he did not believe Jesus had done anything wrong. But many of the people shouted, “Crucify him.” Pilate decided to do what they wanted and have Jesus killed.
