Jesus, a Woman, and a Well

Teaching about living water

Jesus and His disciples were walking through Samaria on their way to Galilee. They stopped to get water at a well. While Jesus rested there, His disciples went to buy food.

John 4:3–8

Jesus asking a woman at the well for a drink.

A woman from Samaria came to the well to fill her water pot. Jesus asked her for a drink. The woman was surprised. Jesus was a Jew, and most Jewish people didn’t talk to Samaritans.

John 4:7–9

Jesus teaching the woman about the gospel.

Jesus told her that people who drink water from the well get thirsty again. But He could give her the “living water” of eternal life, and she would never thirst. The woman said she wanted some of this “living water.”

John 4:10–14

Jesus telling the woman to get her husband.

Jesus told her to get her husband. “I have no husband,” she said. Jesus said she’d had five husbands, and the man she lived with was not her husband.

John 4:16–18

Jesus telling the woman that He is the Savior.

The woman was surprised that Jesus knew these things about her. She said she knew that a Savior was coming soon. Jesus told her that He is the Savior.

John 4:19, 25–26

Jesus teaching more people at the well.

The woman left her water pot at the well and went to the city. She told many people that she had found the Savior. She invited them to come and hear Him teach. Because of this woman, many Samaritans believed in Jesus Christ.
