From Passion to Profession: Richard’s Barbering Journey
In the busy streets of Lomé, Togo, the steady buzz of clippers marks the world Richard Kossivi Kohou has built for himself. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and second counselor in his ward’s elders quorum presidency, Richard balances faith, service, and a craft he’s loved since childhood.
He always had a knack for men’s hairdressing—experimenting on friends and family, dreaming up new styles, and loving the confidence a good haircut can spark. So when he enrolled in a six-month barbering course at the Gathering Place, he saw his chance to turn talent into a real career.
It wasn’t easy. Technical skills, long commutes, juggling Church duties, and Goethe Institute studies—it all stretched him thin. But his instructor pushed him to see hairdressing not just as a technique but as a service: listening, caring, and bringing joy. That mindset changed everything. Slowly, his hands grew more precise, his creativity grew bolder, and the workshop became a place of camaraderie and growth.
Today, Richard cuts hair in his neighborhood with growing confidence and a growing client base. His work helps him save for future opportunities abroad through the Goethe Institute—and he’s convinced his craft will open doors wherever he goes.
Through every step, faith has grounded him. He often thinks of the scripture, “I will provide for my saints” (Doctrine and Covenants 104:15). To Richard, his progress is proof of that promise. “God knows me, loves me, and helps me grow,” he says. “When we work hard and trust Him, we move forward.”
With clippers in hand and gratitude in his heart, Richard is crafting more than hairstyles—he’s shaping a future built on passion, perseverance, and purpose.
