From Struggle to Success: A YSA Finds Hope

In the heart of Lomé, Togo, a young woman’s dream to become a nail technician seemed destined to fade—until faith, perseverance, and an unexpected opportunity changed everything. Meet Germaine, the eldest of six children, whose journey from despair to entrepreneurship began with a simple act of kindness.

After losing her father, Germaine watched her mother struggle to keep their family afloat. “I couldn’t pay for my training,” Germaine recalls. “I was beginning to lose hope.” Her lifelong passion for beauty and nail artistry felt painfully out of reach—until a neighbor, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told her about a free manicure and pedicure training offered at the Lomé Togo Agoe Stake center.

Skeptical but determined, Germaine took a leap of faith—and found herself welcomed with warmth by the missionaries at the Gathering Place and the instructors who believed in her potential. “Their kindness dispelled all my fears,” she says. Through the program, she not only mastered technical skills but also learned invaluable lessons in financial management, small business management, and living a purposeful life in accordance with the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Armed with new skills and a newfound sense of hope, Germaine began saving for her own tools, piece by piece. Her perseverance paid off: she opened her own nail workshop, built a loyal clientele, and became a financial pillar for her family.

“I am immensely grateful,” she says. “The Church and my trainer reached out to me expecting nothing in return, and that touched my heart.”

Now Germaine dreams of paying that kindness forward—helping others find the same opportunity that transformed her life. Her faith has deepened too: inspired by the light she felt through the Church’s Gathering Place, she is preparing for baptism.

“May my story be a testimony,” Germaine concludes. “A helping hand can truly restore hope and change a life.”
