Your Spiritual Security System: Prophetic Counsel to Remind You of the Joy of the Gospel
For those times when you need to refocus on the joy of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we’ve got some reminders for you.
Young adulthood can be filled with ups and downs, especially in this chaotic world. One thing that can truly bring us peace, joy, and hope is the gospel of Jesus Christ. But what do we do if our faith feels a bit battered? What about when choosing to believe feels like a big ask? Or when it seems like we are standing alone among so many opposing voices?
It’s easy to feel like this sometimes. Striving to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in a world that is continuously choosing to withdraw from Him is not always easy. But no matter what is weighing us down, we can look to our inspired prophets, apostles, and leaders for words of comfort, reassurance, inspiration, and peace.
Here are just some of their encouraging messages to help you renew your faith in Jesus Christ and your dedication to His gospel.
When You Want to Believe
“I bless any among you who might be speaking these days of a ‘faith crisis.’ Real faith, life-changing faith, Abrahamic faith, is always in crisis. That is how you find out if it is faith at all. I promise you that more faith will mean less crisis until finally God says, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant.’
“I bless every one of you to know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is exactly that: the Church of Jesus Christ. And only through the ordinances and opportunities it provides can one fully come ‘unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.’”
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “A Future Filled with Hope” (worldwide devotional for young adults, Jan. 8, 2023), Gospel Library.
When You Feel Like You’ve Messed Up
“You may feel at times that it’s not possible to be redeemed, that perhaps you are an exception to God’s love and the Savior’s atoning power because of what you are struggling with or because of what you’ve done. But I testify that you are not beneath the Master’s reach. The Savior ‘descended below all things’ and is in a divine position to lift you and claim you from the darkest abyss and bring you into ‘his marvellous light.’”
Sister Kristin M. Yee, Second Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, “The Joy of Our Redemption,” Liahona, Nov. 2024, 57.
When You Need to Know That Living Differently from the World Will Bring Blessings
“As the glorious Resurrection followed the agonizing Crucifixion, so blessings of every kind are poured out on those who are willing ... to ‘believe in Christ, and view his death, and suffer his cross.’ Sometimes these blessings come soon and sometimes they come later, but the marvelous conclusion to our personal via dolorosa is the promise from the Master Himself that they do and will come. To obtain such blessings, may we follow Him—unfailingly, never faltering nor fleeing, never flinching at the task, not when our crosses may be heavy and not when, for a time, the path may grow dark.”
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “Lifted Up upon the Cross,” Liahona, Nov. 2022, 79.
When You Have Unanswered Questions
“Asking questions and searching for meaning are a natural and normal part of our mortal experience. At times, not readily having complete answers can bring us to the edge of our understanding, and those limitations can feel frustrating or overwhelming. Wondrously, Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness for all of us is designed to help us progress despite our limitations and accomplish what we cannot accomplish on our own, even without a complete knowledge of all things. God’s plan is merciful toward the limitations of our humanity; provides us with our Savior, Jesus Christ, to be our Good Shepherd; and inspires us to use our agency to choose Him.”
Sister Tracy Y. Browning, Second Counselor in the Primary General Presidency, “Seeking Answers to Spiritual Questions,” Liahona, Nov. 2024, 80.
When You Feel Like Life Is Too Hard
“Entering into a covenant relationship with God binds us to Him in a way that makes everything about life easier. Please do not misunderstand me: I did not say that making covenants makes life easy. In fact, expect opposition, because the adversary does not want you to discover the power of Jesus Christ. But yoking yourself with the Savior means you have access to His strength and redeeming power.”
President Russell M. Nelson, “Overcome the World and Find Rest,” Liahona, Nov. 2022, 97.
When You Need to Know How Much Heavenly Father Loves You
“Perhaps you are wrestling with grief, depression, betrayal, loneliness, disappointment, or other powerful intrusion into your ability to feel God’s love for you. If so, these things can dull or suspend our ability to feel as we might otherwise feel. For a season at least, perhaps you will not be able to feel His love, and knowledge will have to suffice. But I wonder if you could experiment—patiently—with different ways of expressing and receiving divine love. …
“Birdsong, feeling the sun or a breeze or rain on my skin, and times when nature puts my senses in awe of God—each has had a part in providing me with heavenly connection. Perhaps the comfort of faithful friends will help. Maybe music? Or serving? Have you kept a record or journal of times when your connection with God was clearer to you? Perhaps you could invite those you trust to share their sources of divine connection with you as you search for relief and understanding. …
“… If you are waiting for [Jesus] to come, might He already be there and within reach?”
Elder Karl D. Hirst of the Seventy, “God’s Favourite,” Liahona, Nov. 2024, 12.
