Teachings of Church Leaders: Lesson 208
“Hope of Israel”
Studying the Teachings of Church Leaders
Throughout the year, students will have several opportunities to study the Lord’s messages given by His inspired leaders. The “Template for Teaching Messages from Church Leaders” document is a tool you can use to help you guide your students as they study these messages. This lesson provides an example of how you can use the template to teach President Nelson’s talk “Hope of Israel” ([worldwide youth devotional, June 3, 2018], Gospel Library). This lesson can help students act on President Nelson’s invitations.
Student preparation: Share with students the title of President Nelson’s talk “Hope of Israel.” Encourage them to read, watch, or listen to all or a portion of the talk before class. Invite them to prayerfully prepare their hearts for the Holy Ghost to teach them as they study messages of the servants of Jesus Christ.
Possible Learning Activities
Note: This lesson provides an example of how teachers could use the “Template for Teaching Messages from Church Leaders” document to help students study messages from Church leaders. You can adjust the ideas in this lesson, use a different combination of ideas from the template, or use your own ideas that would better meet your students’ needs.
Begin the lesson
Begin the lesson in a way that creates interest in students’ minds and hearts to help them prepare for the learning experience. Consider using your own idea or the following “Questions about the topic” idea in the “Methods to begin the lesson” section of the template.
Display the following statement. Consider highlighting or underlining the phrase gather Israel.
President Russell M. Nelson said the following:
My dear extraordinary youth, you were sent to earth at this precise time, the most crucial time in the history of the world, to help gather Israel. There is nothing happening on this earth right now that is more important than that. There is nothing of greater consequence. Absolutely nothing. (“Hope of Israel” [worldwide youth devotional, June 3, 2018], Gospel Library)
Students could discuss the following question in pairs or small groups. Or they could individually write possible questions in their journal.
-
What questions do you or others have about the gathering of Israel—the event that President Nelson calls the most important thing “happening on this earth right now”?
Invite students to share the questions they came up with. They may respond with a variety of questions, including the following:
-
What is the gathering of Israel?
-
Why is the gathering the most important thing happening on the earth today?
-
Why might I want to participate in the gathering of Israel?
Consider inviting students to write the questions they come up with on the board, leaving space underneath each question.
As you look for answers to these questions today, consider how a knowledge of Jesus Christ and His gospel can help answer the questions.
Study the message
The purpose of this section is to help students study portions of President Nelson’s talk “Hope of Israel.” Consider using your own idea or the following “Look for: Answers to questions or concerns” idea from the “Methods to study the message” section of the template.
If your students do not have access to a printed or digital version of the talk, consider distributing the handout “The Gathering of Israel” to each student. This handout contains a written portion of the talk that will be covered in this lesson. You could also invite students to watch this portion of the talk in the video “Hope of Israel,” available at ChurchofJesusChrist.org, from time code 30:26 to 33:37.
If students struggle reading or listening to long sections of a talk, consider sharing one or two paragraphs from the handout and inviting them to draw or write what the gathering of Israel means to them.
Study the provided selections from this talk, looking for answers to any of the questions listed on the board. You could mark on the talk any answers you find. You might consider marking answers to each question in a way that is different from other questions. For example, you could circle answers to one question and underline answers to another, or you could mark them all in different colors.
After students have studied the portions of the talk you selected, consider organizing them into pairs to discuss the following questions.
-
Which questions do you feel were answered in the portions of President Nelson’s talk that you studied? How were they answered?
Consider inviting students to write their answers on the board underneath the question they answered. You could then invite students to explain their answers.
Applying President Nelson’s message
The purpose of this section is to help students apply President Nelson’s invitations to gather Israel. Consider using your own idea or the following the “Identify and apply invitations” idea from the “Methods to apply the message” section of the template.
Distribute the handout titled “Invitations to Enlist in the Gathering of Israel” to all students. Consider inviting them to study this page individually.
Ponder thoughts or promptings from the Holy Ghost that came to your mind or heart as you studied President Nelson’s invitations to the youth. Prayerfully consider which invitation you feel the Lord would have you accept and follow to enlist in the gathering of Israel. You may feel impressed to act on more than one invitation.
Write this invitation in your study journal. You might also write how acting on that invitation can help you draw closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
Consider sharing your testimony of the truths taught by President Nelson. Encourage students to act on the promptings they may have felt.
