What Happens When the Prophet Dies?

The Lord calls prophets to lead His Church, and He has a plan in place for when one of them dies. He always guides and directs His Church!

When the President of the Church dies, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles leads the Church. This now includes the two Apostles who were counselors in the First Presidency.

The Apostles pray and decide when to organize a new First Presidency.

The Lord calls the longest-serving Apostle to be the next prophet and President of the Church.

Through the new prophet, the Lord calls two Apostles as counselors in the new First Presidency.

A new Apostle will be called to serve in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

During general conference, we raise our hands to sustain the new First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Sustaining means we agree to love and support them and follow their guidance as the Lord’s servants.

When a new President of the Church or Apostle is called, you can pray to know that they were called by God. And you can sustain and support them by listening to their words and following them!
