Chapter 3

The Ministry of Jesus Christ

Nothing in human history equals the wonder, the magnitude, or the fruits of the matchless life of the Son of God.

From the Life of Russell M. Nelson

President Russell M. Nelson said:

14:51

“The importance of the Savior’s mission was emphasized by the Prophet Joseph Smith, who declared emphatically that ‘the fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it’ [Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (2007), 49].

“It was this very statement of the Prophet that provided the incentive for 15 prophets, seers, and revelators to issue and sign their testimony to commemorate the 2,000th anniversary of the Lord’s birth.”

President Nelson, who was then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, received the assignment to oversee the effort to combine the testimonies of all the living prophets, seers, and revelators into one declaration. He ensured that each member of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve “had his hand in this process.”

The result was a document titled “The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles.” It begins: “As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the reality of His matchless life and the infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had so profound an influence upon all who have lived and will yet live upon the earth.”

Seventeen years after the document was published, President Nelson referred to that “historic testimony” in a general conference talk. He said:

14:51

“As you seek to learn more about Jesus Christ, I urge you to study ‘The Living Christ.’ As we invest time in learning about the Savior and His atoning sacrifice, we are drawn to participate in another key element to accessing His power: we choose to have faith in Him and follow Him.”

Nothing in human history equals the matchless life of the Son of God

We revere the Son of God as our Savior, our Redeemer, and our Master. He came into the world to do the will of His Father [see 3 Nephi 27:13]. He died for us and was resurrected from the tomb. His triumph over death brings the blessings of resurrection and immortality to all mankind [see 1 Corinthians 15:20–22]. Our adoration for Him is typified in this passage from the Book of Mormon:

“We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, … that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins” [2 Nephi 25:26].

Nothing in human history equals the wonder, the magnitude, or the fruits of the matchless life of the Son of God. He is our exemplar and the author of our faith. And one day He will again come to the earth to begin His promised millennial reign.

Though we don’t know all the details pertaining to [the Savior’s] birth, we certainly understand the unique parentage of this Babe of Bethlehem. Several scriptures ask the question “Who shall declare His generation?” [Isaiah 53:8]. We declare solemnly and with conviction: Jesus was born of an immortal Father and a mortal mother. From His immortal Father, Jesus inherited the power to live forever. From His mortal mother He inherited the fate of physical death. … Those unique attributes were essential for His mission to atone for the sins of all mankind. … Each one of us with a testimony of the Lord has the privilege in faith to know of His divine parentage and to testify that Jesus is the Son of the living God.

Jesus Christ’s names, titles, and responsibilities are of eternal significance

We honor [Jesus Christ] as the most important individual ever to live on Planet Earth. He is Jesus the Christ—our Master and more. He has numerous names, titles, and responsibilities, all of eternal significance.

[Jesus Christ] was anointed by His Father to be the Savior of the world. [Two of His] titles—the Messiah and the Christ—designated His responsibility as the anointed one.

Under the direction of His Father, Jesus was Creator of this and other worlds. Jesus is our Advocate with the Father. Jesus was the promised Immanuel, the great I Am and Jehovah of Old Testament times.

He was sent by His Father to accomplish the Atonement, the central act of all human history. Because of His Atonement, immortality became a reality for all, and eternal life became a possibility for those who choose to follow Him. These objectives are the work and glory of Almighty God.

As our great Exemplar, Jesus taught us how to live, to love, and to learn. He taught us how to pray, to forgive, and endure to the end.

He taught us how to care about others more than we care about ourselves. He taught us about mercy and kindness—making real changes in our lives through His power. He taught us how to find peace of heart and mind. One day, we will stand before Him as our just Judge and merciful Master.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our Savior and our Redeemer. He is the Son of God, the Holy One of Israel. He is the Anointed One. Under the direction of the Father, He is the Creator of all that has been created. Jesus Christ was the Great Jehovah, God of the Old Testament. He was the promised Immanuel. He is our great Exemplar and our Advocate with the Father. Because of His restored gospel, all the blessings of His priesthood are available to all mankind as they come unto Him and are perfected in Him.

During mortality, the Savior accomplished the Atonement and served as our example

During his relatively brief sojourn in mortality, the Savior accomplished two overarching objectives: One was his “work and [his] glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” [Moses 1:39]. The other he stated simply: “I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done” [John 13:15].

His first objective we know as the Atonement. This was his magnificent mission in mortality. … That mission was uniquely his. Born of a mortal mother and an immortal Father, he was the only one who could voluntarily lay down his life and take it up again. The glorious consequences of his Atonement were infinite and eternal. He took the sting out of death and made temporary the grief of the grave.

His responsibility for the Atonement was known even before the Creation and the Fall. Not only was it to provide for the resurrection and immortality of all humankind, it was to enable us to be forgiven of our sins—upon conditions established by him. And his Atonement opened the way by which we could be united with him and with our families eternally. This prospect we esteem as eternal life—the greatest gift of God to man.

No one else could effect the Atonement. No other person, even of the greatest wealth and power, could ever save one soul—not even his own. And no other individual will be required or permitted to shed blood for the eternal salvation of another human being. Jesus did it “once for all” [Hebrews 10:10]. … Because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all mankind, even as many as will, shall be redeemed.

15:43

Condescending to come to earth as the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh, He was brutally reviled, mocked, spit upon, and scourged. In the Garden of Gethsemane, our Savior took upon Himself every pain, every sin, and all of the anguish and suffering ever experienced by you and me and by everyone who has ever lived or will ever live. Under the weight of that excruciating burden, He bled from every pore [see Doctrine and Covenants 19:18]. All of this suffering was intensified as He was cruelly crucified on Calvary’s cross.

Through these excruciating experiences and His subsequent Resurrection—His infinite Atonement—He granted immortality to all and ransomed each one of us from the effects of sin on condition of our repentance.

The Lord’s second far-reaching objective in mortality was to serve as an example for us. His exemplary life constituted his mortal ministry. It included his teachings, parables, and sermons. It encompassed his miracles, his loving-kindness, and his long-suffering toward the children of men. It embraced his compassionate use of priesthood authority. It included his righteous indignation when he condemned sin and when he overthrew the tables of the money changers. It also included his heartaches. He was mocked, scourged, and disowned by his own people—even denied by one of his disciples. …

… The Lord asked us to follow his example. His appeals are crystal clear:

  • “What manner of men ought ye to be? … Even as I am” [3 Nephi 27:27].

  • “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” [Matthew 4:19].

  • “I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done” [John 13:15].

These and other similar scriptures were not written as suggestions. They are divine imperatives! We are to follow his example! … Surely the best evidence of our adoration of Jesus is our emulation of him.

When we begin to realize who Jesus is and what he has done for us, we can understand, to some degree, the logic of the first and great commandment: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” [Mark 12:30]. In other words, all that we think and do and say should be steeped in our love for him.

In a coming day, Jesus Christ will return to the earth as the millennial Messiah

Remember that the fulness of Christ’s ministry lies in the future. The prophecies of His Second Coming have yet to be fulfilled. We are just building up to the climax of this last dispensation—when the Savior’s Second Coming becomes a reality. …

The Lord will return to the land that He made holy by His mission there in mortality. In triumph, He will come again to Jerusalem. In royal robes of red to symbolize His blood, which oozed from every pore, He shall return to the Holy City. There and elsewhere, “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together” (Isaiah 40:5; see also Doctrine and Covenants 101:23). His “name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

He will govern from two world capitals: one in old Jerusalem and the other in the New Jerusalem “built upon the American continent” (Articles of Faith 1:10). From these centers He will direct the affairs of His Church and kingdom. Another temple will yet be built in Jerusalem. From that temple He shall reign forever as Lord of Lords. Water will issue from under the temple. Waters of the Dead Sea will be healed.

In that day He will bear new titles and be surrounded by special Saints. He will be known as “Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that [will be] with him [will be those who] are called, and chosen, and faithful” (Revelation 17:14) to their trust here in mortality. Then He “shall reign for ever and ever” (Revelation 11:15).

The earth will be returned to its paradisiacal state and be made new. There will be a new heaven and a new earth (see Revelation 21:1; Ether 13:9; Doctrine and Covenants 29:23–24).

It is our charge—it is our privilege—to help prepare the world for that day.

14:50

My dear brothers and sisters, in a coming day, Jesus Christ will return to the earth as the millennial Messiah. So today I call upon you to rededicate your lives to Jesus Christ. I call upon you to help gather scattered Israel and to prepare the world for the Second Coming of the Lord. I call upon you to talk of Christ, testify of Christ, have faith in Christ, and rejoice in Christ!

Come unto Christ and “offer your whole [soul]” to Him [Omni 1:26]. This is the secret to a life of joy!

The best is yet to come, my dear brothers and sisters, because the Savior is coming again! The best is yet to come because the Lord is hastening His work. The best is yet to come as we fully turn our hearts and our lives to Jesus Christ.

I bear my solemn witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I am His disciple. I am honored to be His servant. At His Second Coming, “the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.” That day will be filled with joy for the righteous!

Through the power of the sacred priesthood keys I hold, I declare this truth to you and to all the world!

How does your knowledge of Christ’s Second Coming affect your thoughts and actions now?

Choose to learn about Jesus Christ and be one of His true disciples now

29:25

How can you increase in your discipleship? I have an invitation for you that will help—it’s an assignment, actually—if you choose to accept it. Commence tonight to consecrate a portion of your time each week to studying everything Jesus said and did as recorded in the Old Testament, for He is the Jehovah of the Old Testament. Study His laws as recorded in the New Testament, for He is its Christ. Study His doctrine as recorded in the Book of Mormon, for there is no book of scripture in which His mission and His ministry are more clearly revealed. And study His words as recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants, for He continues to teach His people in this dispensation.

This may seem like a large assignment, but I encourage you to accept it. If you proceed to learn all you can about Jesus Christ, I promise you that your love for Him, and for God’s laws, will grow beyond what you currently imagine. I promise you also that your ability to turn away from sin will increase. Your desire to keep the commandments will soar. You will find yourself better able to walk away from the entertainment and entanglements of those who mock the followers of Jesus Christ. To assist you, refer to the Topical Guide for references under the topic “Jesus Christ.”

Study everything Jesus Christ is by prayerfully and vigorously seeking to understand what each of His various titles and names means personally for you. For example, He really is your Advocate with the Father. He will take your side. He will stand up for you. He will speak on your behalf, every time, as you choose to be more like Him. …

In a coming day, you will present yourself before the Savior. You will be overwhelmed to the point of tears to be in His holy presence. You will struggle to find words to thank Him for paying for your sins, for forgiving you of any unkindness toward others, for healing you from the injuries and injustices of this life.

You will thank Him for strengthening you to do the impossible, for turning your weaknesses into strengths, and for making it possible for you to live with Him and your family forever. His identity, His Atonement, and His attributes will become personal and real to you.

But you don’t have to wait until then. Choose to be one of His true disciples now. Be one who truly loves Him, who truly wants to serve and lead as He did.

14:51

Earlier this year, I asked the young adults of the Church to consecrate a portion of their time each week to study everything Jesus said and did as recorded in the standard works. … I gave that challenge because I had already accepted it myself. I read and underlined every verse cited about Jesus Christ, as listed under the main heading and the 57 subtitles in the Topical Guide. When I finished that exciting exercise, my wife asked me what impact it had on me. I told her, “I am a different man!”

With all my heart I pray that the transforming influence of the Lord may make a profound difference in your lives. … Jesus is the Christ. His mission and his ministry can bless each of you now and forever more.
