About the Hymns

Come, Hear the Word the Lord Has Spoken

Author and composer Frans Heijdemann was an accomplished organist, conductor, and translator from the Netherlands. For him music was a natural means of expressing faith, praising the Lord, and uniting people of different religions. He led choirs and orchestras for Church and civic events, often conducting ensembles in performing his own compositions.

Brother Heijdemann worked in Church publishing for many years. He was an editor for the Dutch edition of the Liahona magazine and worked on the Dutch hymnbook (Lofzangen) and children’s songbook (Kinderliedjes), which were published in the 1990s. He wrote “Come, Hear the Word the Lord Has Spoken” for the Dutch hymnbook.

Originally titled “Luister naar het woord des Heren” (“Listen to the Word of the Lord”), Brother Heijdemann’s hymn is a song of hope and gratitude. It encourages us to rejoice in the reopening of the heavens and the blessings of modern-day revelation. It expresses the joy we will feel at the Second Coming, when the Savior will wipe away all tears and rule in righteousness as our King. And it invites us to join in singing praises to Him for His anticipated return.

Activities for Families

  • Hear and sing the harmony. Notice how almost every syllable in this hymn has four musical notes connected to it. The top note is the melody, which most people sing. The other notes are alto, tenor, and bass. They can be harder to hear, but they add richness to the music.

    • Play a recording of the hymn, and encourage your children to listen for one of the other musical parts. Can they hear a different tune underneath the melody? You might try singing one together. These parts create harmony, which makes the hymn sound fuller and more beautiful. Exploring this with your children can make singing more fun and meaningful!

  • Listen for messages in sacred music. Explain to your family that the sacred music in the Church is filled with beautiful messages about Jesus Christ and His gospel.

    • As you listen to the hymn together, invite everyone to pay special attention to the words. Each of the four verses contains at least one message. Assign one verse to each family member, and invite each person to share the message he or she hears in five words or less.

    • Encourage family members to listen carefully to the hymns sung during Church meetings that week. Invite them to listen for messages about Jesus Christ and His teachings. Then come together as a family and share the messages everyone discovered. Following this simple practice can deepen your family’s love for sacred music and strengthen their testimonies through song.
