About the Hymns
Come, Lord Jesus
The hymn “Come, Lord Jesus” refers to the Savior’s birth in Bethlehem, His mission of healing and salvation, and His future return in glory to reign upon the earth. It was originally written for the musical production Savior of the World: His Birth and Resurrection, which premiered in 2000 in the newly completed Conference Center Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. This dramatization, created under the direction of the First Presidency, bears witness of Jesus Christ to the world.
The play depicts Mary and Joseph and others preparing to welcome the infant Jesus, as well as scenes of those who were witnesses to His Resurrection. It concludes with the resurrected Lord ascending to heaven as His followers plead for the day of His return: “Come in glory; come again. Come to us to rule and reign. Ready us to kneel and greet Thee. Come, Lord Jesus, come!” As we sing this hymn, we join in that invitation, asking for the Lord’s help to prepare us for His Second Coming.

Activities for Families
-
Look forward to Christ’s coming. Before singing this hymn, invite your family to think of a time they waited eagerly for something special—like the birth of a baby, a missionary coming home, a visit from grandparents, a big trip, a birthday, or a holiday. Talk about how exciting it felt to wait and to finally have that experience. Explain that the return of Jesus Christ will be even greater than anything we’ve ever looked forward to. Ask your children to close their eyes and imagine what it will be like to see Him—to kneel at His feet, touch His hands, smile face to face, or feel His embrace. Sing the hymn together with those joyful thoughts in mind. Remind your family that while we don’t know exactly when the Savior will come again, we can prepare our hearts and look forward to that day with faith and excitement.

Discuss times when people asked Jesus Christ to come to them. After singing or listening to the hymn, invite your family to think of times in the scriptures when people asked Jesus Christ to come to them. You might talk about when Mary and Martha sent for Jesus when their brother Lazarus was sick, or when Jairus asked Jesus to heal his daughter. Describe how the Savior responded with love, compassion, and power. Ask your children what these stories teach us about Jesus Christ’s willingness to help and bless others. Testify to your children that He is willing to comfort, heal, and bless them today.
