About the Hymns

I Have Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

Over the years, author and composer Janice Kapp Perry has been drawn to writing songs that help children understand faith. She believes that music can help even the youngest children to develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and learn how to express it. Sister Perry wrote “I Have Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ” for a Primary sacrament meeting presentation. She described it as “a short declaration of faith that is much like bearing a testimony about Jesus Christ and expressing a commitment to keep His commandments because of that faith.”

Using language that is easy for children to understand, this song expresses powerful truths about the Savior. Each verse begins and ends with the statement “I have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.” The lyrics teach that as we “learn to hear His voice,” we can feel the Savior’s infinite love for us and know that He will help us make righteous choices. Sister Perry wrote the music in an upbeat gospel song style that she hoped children would enjoy.

Activities for Families

  • Share ways to show faith in Jesus Christ. Listen to the song together as a family, and see if you notice all seven times the words “I have faith” are sung. Each time your children hear or sing the phrase, invite them to tap the rhythm with two fingers on the palm of their hand. Listen to or sing the song again, this time encouraging everyone to listen closely for who we have faith in. Invite family members to share simple ways they can show their faith in Jesus Christ. You might encourage them to listen to the end of the song for an idea of how to do this.

  • Express your faith in Jesus Christ. While kneeling in prayer with your children or grandchildren, take a quiet moment to sing this song to them. Let the simple words and melody invite the Spirit and create a peaceful, reverent feeling. Share your personal faith in Jesus Christ and your testimony that He is real and that He loves us. Your heartfelt words can leave a lasting impression and help your little ones feel the Savior’s presence in their lives.
