Isaiah 50–57: Lesson 123

Isaiah 51–52

“Hearken unto Me”

Visit “Studying the Scriptures” to help prepare yourself spiritually to learn.

Through Isaiah, the Lord spoke to His covenant people, both anciently and today. He extended beautiful promises to them if they chose to hearken to His loving invitations. As His covenant people, the Lord extends these same promises and invitations to us. This lesson can help you hearken unto the Savior’s invitations.

Sometimes the ability to listen and act can make all the difference.

In 2022, Darren Harrison boarded a small, one-engine plane as a passenger for a short flight. A few hours later, he radioed the following message: “I’ve got a serious situation here. My pilot has gone incoherent. I have no idea how to fly the airplane.” Soon, a flight instructor was on the radio giving instructions on how to land the plane.

  • If you were in this situation, what might you feel?

  • How would the seriousness of the situation affect the way you listened?

After carefully listening to instructions, Darren successfully landed the plane. The pilot was rushed to the hospital. He was treated for a serious medical condition but later recovered.

Darren’s survival depended on his ability to receive and obey instructions. Your ability to receive and obey instructions from God is critical to your spiritual safety and survival.

note icon In Isaiah 51, the Lord repeatedly instructs us to “hearken” (verses 1, 4, and 7). Mark each time you see the word. Copy or link part of the following definition from President Russell M. Nelson next to the first time “hearken” appears in Isaiah 51.

President Russell M. Nelson

It means “to listen with the intent to obey.” To hearken means to “hear Him”—to hear what the Savior says and then to heed His counsel. In those two words—“Hear Him”—God gives us the pattern for success, happiness, and joy in this life. We are to hear the words of the Lord, hearken to them, and heed what He has told us! (“Hear Him,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2020, 89).

mark iconRead Isaiah 51:3 and mark what the Lord promises to those who hearken to Him and keep their covenants.

note iconCompare the story of Darren Harrison with your own challenges. Make a note next to verse 3, explaining why you think hearkening to instructions from an all-knowing God would bring comfort, joy, and gladness.

Review the following study options. Complete two or more. Then complete the “Now What?” section at the end of the lesson.

Option A

Will Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ ever forget me?

Read Isaiah 52:1–3, looking for the Lord’s invitations to His people. Note: Joseph Smith asked the Lord for help to understand this passage. Link Doctrine and Covenants 113:7–10 to this passage.

note iconMake notes next to verses 1 and 2, answering the following questions:

  • What can we do to “put on thy strength” or receive the blessings offered through the Savior’s priesthood?

  • What are things the Lord invites us to spiritually put on or shake off and remove from our lives? How might we put on or shake off those things?

Option B

Where can I receive the Lord’s instructions?

a man standing in a stone watchtower overlooking a valley

Read Isaiah 52:7–10, looking for the Lord’s blessings promised to those who listen to Jesus Christ and His servants.

Isaiah 52:7 can refer to Jesus Christ and those who preach His gospel.

tag iconNote that “watchmen” in verse 8 refers to the Lord’s prophets. You may want to tag verse 8 with “prophets.”

The phrase “the Lord hath made bare his holy arm” (Isaiah 52:10) refers to the Lord demonstrating His power.

note iconMake a note next to verses 7 and 8, answering the following question:

  • Why is it important that the Lord uses prophets to give us instructions?

Option C

How can I have courage when I feel afraid?

Read Isaiah 52:11–12, looking for the Lord’s invitations and blessings. To help you understand His blessings, note that the word “rearward” (Isaiah 52:12) refers to someone who protects an army or person from behind.

link iconThe Lord made a similar promise to Joseph Smith. Read Doctrine and Covenants 84:88 and link it to Isaiah 52:12.

notebook iconAnswer the following in your notebook:

  • In what ways do you think the Lord is our rearward when we hearken to His instructions?

Now What?

notebook iconPonder what you learned today and any invitations or counsel you feel Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ extended to you through the Holy Ghost. In your study journal, consider answering the following question:

  • What do you feel the Lord is inviting you to do to receive His help with your challenges, worries, or questions?
