What event is being described in these verses?
-
“darkness shall cover the earth” (Isaiah 60:2)
-
“a famine of hearing the words of the Lord” (Amos 8:11)
-
“grievous wolves shall enter in among you” (Acts 20:29)
-
“a falling away” (2 Thessalonians 2:3)
If you guessed the Great Apostasy, you’re right! The Great Apostasy refers to “a widespread falling away from the gospel and Church of Jesus Christ” that occurred after the death of the Savior and His Apostles (Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, 37).
Isaiah’s Prophesies. Many of Isaiah’s prophecies refer to different time periods and have multiple fulfillments. For example, Isaiah 29 was a prophecy for Isaiah’s own people that Jerusalem would soon be destroyed. However, his prophecy in Isaiah 29 can also refer to the Great Apostasy (see 2 Nephi 27).
Read Isaiah 29:8–10, looking for descriptions of the Great Apostasy. Mark what you find. We live in a world where many are still spiritually hungry, staggering, or sleeping. We may also make choices that distance us from the Lord. Take a moment to ponder ways you, or those you love, may feel this way.
As you study today, seek help from the Holy Ghost to appreciate what Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have given us to overcome these challenges and turn to Them.
In Isaiah 29:4, Isaiah prophesied of the Book of Mormon. The book was translated from plates hidden in the ground, which Isaiah described as a voice “out of the dust.” Link the following passages, which identify the Book of Mormon as a fulfillment of this prophesy, to Isaiah 29:4:
-
Last paragraph of “Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith” found in the introductory pages of the Book of Mormon.
Read Isaiah 29:13–14, looking for what the Lord said He would do in addition to revealing the Book of Mormon to overcome the effects of the Great Apostasy.
President Russell M. Nelson explained what the marvelous work and wonder is:
That marvelous work [and wonder] would include the coming forth of the Book of Mormon and the Restoration of the gospel. (“Scriptural Witnesses,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2007, 46)
Create a note by the phrase “a marvellous work and a wonder” in Isaiah 29:14 with the following truth: The Lord restored His gospel, and brought forth of the Book of Mormon, to overcome the effects of the Great Apostasy.
Isaiah 29:13–14 is a doctrinal mastery passage. Consider tagging doctrinal mastery passages with the topic they teach so you can find them easily later. Memorize the reference and key scripture phrase, “The Restoration of the gospel is ‘a marvellous work and a wonder.’” Use music to recite the key scripture phrase. Use a familiar tune or chorus to a song and replace the words with the key scripture phrase.
The Restoration of the Gospel is “God’s reestablishment of the truths and ordinances of His gospel among men on earth” (“Restoration of the Gospel,” Guide to the Scriptures, Gospel Library).
In your notebook, respond to the following:
-
How can the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Book of Mormon help us overcome the spiritual difficulties caused by the Great Apostasy?
Review the following study options. Complete one or more.
Option A
How has the Book of Mormon brought me closer to God?
Read Isaiah 29:18–19. Mark blessings that come because of the Book of Mormon.
President Russell M. Nelson explained:
Something powerful happens when a child of God seeks to know more about Him and His Beloved Son. Nowhere are those truths taught more clearly and powerfully than in the Book of Mormon. (“The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2017, 61)
Identify a verse or story from the Book of Mormon that brings you closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. If helpful, you could look at Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages.
Share a verse from the Book of Mormon that you are grateful for with a family member or friend. You may ask them to share what verse they are grateful for.
Option B
How can I act in faith to gain a personal witness of the Restoration of the Savior’s gospel?
In April 2020, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles issued a proclamation to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the First Vision received by Joseph Smith. The proclamation was titled “The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: A Bicentennial Proclamation to the World.”
Read or watch President Nelson share “The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: A Bicentennial Proclamation to the World.”
Prayerfully study the message of the Restoration and choose one or two ways that you will “act in faith” to gain a personal witness of the divinity of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
