Identifying Truths from God in the Scriptures

Visit “Studying the Scriptures” to help prepare yourself spiritually to learn.

God often uses physical experiences to teach essential spiritual lessons. For example, God used the Israelites’ needs for water and for help in battle to teach them and us. Through practice and the guidance of the Spirit, we can learn to identify and apply the spiritual truths in scripture accounts to our lives. This lesson can help you identify truths from God in the scriptures and connect those truths to your life.

Look at the following picture. Do you know which part of the ship is the helm?

ship in the ocean

The helm consists of the rudder that is on the back of the ship as well as the equipment sailors use to control the rudder. The rudder is used to steer the ship.

Watch the video “The Principles of My Gospel” from time code 12:27 to 13:09. Or read the following statement by Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:

15:0
Elder David A. Bednar

Gospel principles are for me and you what a helm is to a ship. Correct principles enable us to find our way and to stand firm, steadfast, and immovable so we do not lose our balance and fall in the raging latter-day storms of darkness and confusion. If available, watch the video “Identifying Doctrines and Principles: Students’ Testimonies” (2:39). In this video, youth share their experiences identifying truths in the scriptures. Or ask someone about their experiences identifying truths and relating them to their life.

Finding gospel truths provides a deeper, more meaningful experience with the Lord’s word.

Finding Truth. Some truths are clearly stated. For example, some are “if-then” statements. Other times prophets use the phrase “and thus we see” to state a truth. Other truths are implied and require you to look for deeper meaning. All gospel truths can help you strengthen your relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

After the Lord saved Moses and the children of Israel from the Egyptians, they traveled in the wilderness toward their promised land. Use the following skills to identify gospel truths:

  1. mark iconRead Exodus 17:8–13. Mark words or phrases that can help you summarize the story.

  2. Read Exodus 17:8–13 again. This time, look for words or phrases that can help you finish the following statements of truth:

    • These verses teach me that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ …

    • I learned that as I sustain the Lord’s prophet …

  3. note iconWrite a truth in a note next to verses 8–13.

  4. Think about how you can apply this truth to your life. The following questions might help:

    • What are some situations when this truth can help me stay faithful?

    • When might sharing this truth with someone help them stay on the covenant path?
