Overview

In the book of Hosea, the Lord used the marriage of Hosea and Gomer as a symbol to teach Israel about His unfailing covenantal love. Through the prophet Joel, the Lord promised, “I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh” (Joel 2:28; see also Joseph Smith—History 1:41).

As you seek to teach by the Spirit, look for ways to help students recognize ways the Spirit speaks to them. Prepare to teach

The following information provides you with ideas of what you may need to prepare in advance for each lesson.

Hosea

Lesson purpose: To help students understand the Lord’s unfailing love and mercy for them.

Joel

Lesson purpose: To help students increase their capacity to receive personal revelation from the Lord through the Holy Ghost.

  • Student preparation: Provide students with the question “What can I do to receive more personal revelation in my life?” Invite them to reflect on different ways they could answer. They could also look to the scriptures or teachings of Church leaders or ask people they trust for answers to the question.

  • Handout:Increasing Your Capacity to Receive Revelation

  • Items: A small cup, a pitcher, a large bucket, pieces of paper

  • Items to display: Instructions for four different options to discuss ways to help us receive personal revelation

Assess Your Learning 9

Lesson purpose: To help students reflect on the goals they have set and the growth they have experienced during their study of Jeremiah–Joel.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come prepared to share a scripture passage that is meaningful to them from their study of the Old Testament. Ask them to think about how that passage helps them follow Jesus Christ.

  • Items to display: An image of the Savior; prompts to help students evaluate their beliefs about their divine mission; a graphic to help students evaluate their plan to share the Savior’s gospel
