Kirtland Temple in 1836

After receiving a commandment in 1833 to build a house of the Lord in Kirtland, Ohio, the Saints worked for three years to construct a temple. In March 1836, the building was completed, and Joseph Smith offered a dedicatory prayer as recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 109. A remarkable spiritual outpouring followed, including the appearance of Jesus Christ in the temple. Other heavenly messengers appeared and conferred priesthood keys on Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. (See Doctrine and Covenants 110.)

“We ask thee, Holy Father, that thy servants may go forth from this house armed with thy power, and that thy name may be upon them, and thy glory be round about them, and thine angels have charge over them

“And from this place they may bear exceedingly great and glorious tidings, in truth, unto the ends of the earth” (Doctrine and Covenants 109:22–23).
