  • 1801 June 1, is born in Whittingham, Vermont

  • 1815 (age 14) His mother dies; earns his own way in life; becomes a carpenter

  • 1824 (age 23) Marries Miriam Works; she dies in 1832

  • 1832 (age 31) Is baptized; ordained an elder

  • 1834 (age 33) Marries Mary Ann Angell

  • 1835 (age 34) Is ordained an Apostle

  • 1839–41 (age 38–40) Serves a mission to Great Britain

  • 1844 (age 43) Joseph Smith is martyred; becomes the leader of the Church as President of the Quorum of the Twelve

  • 1846–47 (age 45–46) Leads the exodus to the Salt Lake Valley

  • 1847 (age 46) Is sustained as President of the Church

  • 1850 (age 49) Becomes the governor of the Territory of Utah
