“The Pelican,” Friend, Aug. 1987, 32

The Pelican

By Vivian Gouled

The pelican has a great big pouch

underneath his bill,

Where he can store his catch of fish

and always have his fill.

He perches near the salty sea,

and when he starts to fly,

He spreads his wings and looks just like

an airplane in the sky.

Sometimes he swims, or rides the waves,

or just sits in the sun.

It seems to me that the pelican

must have a lot of fun!
