Jesus Brings Lazarus Back to Life

“I am the resurrection, and the life”

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived in a city called Bethany. They believed in Jesus, and He loved them. Mary and Martha were Lazarus’s sisters.

John 11:1, 5

Lazarus gets sick.

Lazarus became very sick. Jesus was in another city. Mary and Martha sent Him a message to let Him know His friend was sick.

John 11:1–3

Jesus says that He will bring Lazarus back to life.

Jesus waited for two days. Then He told His disciples they would go to Bethany. The disciples were worried because some of the people near Bethany wanted to hurt Jesus. But Jesus wanted to help Lazarus. Jesus said that Lazarus had already died, and He was going to bring him back to life.

John 11:6–16

Martha meets Jesus.

Martha met Jesus outside the city. She said that if Jesus had come earlier, Lazarus would not have died. Jesus promised that Lazarus would live again.

John 11:17–24

Martha talks with Jesus.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection, and the life.” He asked Martha if she believed Him. She said, “I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God.”

John 11:25–27

Martha, Mary, and Jesus.

Martha went back to the house and told Mary that Jesus had come. Mary came and fell down at Jesus’s feet, crying about her brother. Jesus cried too. He loved Lazarus, Mary, and Martha.

John 11:28–36

Jesus goes to the cave where Lazarus is buried.

Jesus, Martha, Mary, and others went to the cave where Lazarus was buried. A large stone covered the opening. Jesus said to move the stone away.

John 11:38–39

Jesus asks Martha to believe in Him.

But Martha told Jesus that Lazarus had already been dead four days. Jesus reminded Martha about His promise. He asked her to believe.

John 11:39–40

Jesus tells Lazarus to come forth.

Then Jesus prayed to His Father. He thanked God for always hearing Him. Jesus wanted the people to believe that God had sent Him to be the Savior. Then Jesus called out, “Lazarus, come forth.”

John 11:41–43

Lazarus walks out of the cave.

Lazarus walked out of the cave. He was still wrapped in the clothes and sheets he had been buried in. Jesus told the people to unwrap him. Many of the people watching that day now believed that Jesus truly was the Savior, the Son of God.
