The Restoration of the Sacrament

sacrament being passed at organization of restored Church

When The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized in 1830, the Lord restored the sacred ordinance of the sacrament. He commanded His people to “meet together often to partake of bread and wine in the remembrance of the Lord Jesus” (Doctrine and Covenants 20:75).

This timeline shows how the sacrament has been instituted in different eras. Although the people and places change, in every era the sacrament helps disciples of Jesus Christ always remember Him and have His Spirit with them.

Notes

  1. Jesus Christ instituted the sacrament among His disciples in Jerusalem during the annual Passover celebration, which includes a symbolic meal with bread to remember that God delivered the Israelites from Egypt (see Mark 14:12; see also Exodus 12:17). President Jeffrey R. Holland, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, asked, “Do we see [our weekly sacrament service] as our passover, remembrance of our safety and deliverance and redemption? … It should be a powerful, reverent, reflective moment” (“This Do in Remembrance of Me,” Ensign, Nov. 1995, 68).
