Caring Report 2025—Environmental Stewardship
Recognizing the sacredness of the earth and its resources, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to implement sustainable practices that support human well-being. In 2025, the Church enhanced its ability to care for those in need by expanding access to solar power.
Solar Power and Access to Education
For thousands of communities around the world, electricity is expensive, unreliable, or nonexistent, which makes it difficult for people to access quality education. In 2025, the Church supported multiple solar power projects to improve education opportunities for those in need, including:
- Equipping Church meetinghouses in off-grid communities with rooftop solar panels, backup batteries, and satellite internet—transforming them into virtual schools during the week and increasing enrollment in BYU–Pathway and self-reliance classes.
- Distributing handheld solar lights in collaboration with SolarBuddy across multiple continents, helping children complete homework at night.
- Donating 100 solar panels and batteries to families in the Navajo Nation not yet connected to the electricity grid, enabling children to charge school laptops at home.
- Installing solar panels on primary schools to facilitate increased classroom opportunities.
Solar Power and Improved Health
In addition to providing better education opportunities, solar power can also improve health through access to cleaner water, reduced air pollution, and better nutrition. In 2025, the Church supported several such projects, including:
- Installing motorized boreholes in communities without accessible water—some powered by solar panels—to provide cleaner drinking water and reduce waterborne illnesses.
- Working with CDE Suez Pacific to install five solar-powered water desalination plants in isolated communities in Kiribati, which reduced illness caused by contaminated groundwater.
