On November 30, 1838, Joseph Smith and five other Latter-day Saints were herded into the dungeon-like Liberty Jail to await trial on charges of treason. During the four-and-a-half-month imprisonment at Liberty, the Prophet Joseph received three important revelations and wrote numerous letters to the Saints giving them counsel and encouragement. This painting depicts Liberty Jail accurately with small, iron-grated windows as the only sources of light and ventilation in the confined quarters. Men are surrounding the front part of the jail. Painting number 10 of the 23 paintings in the "Mormon Panorama" series.
