Biblical/Historical info: The dome of the rock, built between A.D. 687 and 691 was constructed around the rough hewn rock seen in the photograph. The rock, measuring approximately 40x52 feet and rising seven feet above the rest of the Mount, is the summit of Mount Moriah. The rock formed the base of the Jewish "Altar of Burnt Offering." A hole in the rock allowed sacrificial blood to drain into a cave under the rock called the "Well  of Souls." According to Jewish tradition, the Prophets Abraham and Elijah, and the Kings David and Solomon prayed in the cave.

The dome is built on the supposed site of Solomon's and Herod's Temples.

Christians and Jews believe that Abraham brought Isaac to the rock to sacrifice him.
(See Genesis 22:1-22)

Moslems believe that Abraham brought his son Ishmael (not Isaac) to sacrifice him. the Moslems also believe that Adam and Eve offered sacrifices upon the rock. Most importantly, the Moslems believe that Mohammed ascended to Heaven on his winged steed from the rock. They believe the rock began to ascend with the Prophet, but was held down by angels. they maintain that the footprints of Mohammad and the fingerprints of the angel are visible on the rock.
