Two years after the Saints moved to Caldwell County in northern Missouri, conflict and violence resumed. This scene depicts one of the many confrontations that occured in 1838. A 75-man Mormon militia launched an attack against two hundred men from the Missouri militia to free Mormon prisoners. This was one of the Saints' most successful armed conflicts. However, exaggerated reports of the battle prompted Missouri Governor Lilburn Boggs' order to exterminate the Mormons.
