To the north of the
Kirtland Temple is the Kirtland North Cemetery, also known as the Kirtland Temple Cemetery and the Mormon Cemetery. In the 1830s it was known as the Kirtland Mills Burying Ground. The cemetery predates the Saints’ arrival in Kirtland, with the earliest recorded burial being for Philo Ingersoll, who died in 1827.
Among those buried here are Joseph Smith Jr.’s grandmother; Oliver Cowdery’s parents; Hyrum Smith’s young daughter, Mary; and Thankful Pratt. View a full list of those buried in the cemetery on the
Kirtland City website.
What to Expect
The city of Kirtland owns and maintains the cemetery. It is open to the public, but visitors should be respectful of those visiting family members.
