The
Hiram Page gravesite is located in Excelsior Springs, Ray County, Missouri. It’s on the property that Hiram’s wife,
Catherine Whitmer Page, and their sons once owned. Originally, just a few square-cut stones denoted that a grave was on the property. The landowners after the Page family took care of the grave for generations, not knowing its owner’s identity. After the grave was identified, a new headstone was placed in 2001.
Being one of the
eight special witnesses of the Book of Mormon, Hiram Page signed his name alongside others who saw and handled the golden plates. He had married Catherine, David Whitmer’s sister, in 1825 and lived near the Whitmers in Fayette, New York. Four years later, he learned of Joseph Smith’s calling to translate the Book of Mormon and became an ardent supporter of Joseph’s work.
Hiram and Catherine moved with the Whitmer family to Missouri in 1832. There they suffered with other Latter-day Saints the violent expulsion from Jackson County in 1833. Within five years, the Whitmer family had distanced themselves from the Church. Despite this separation, Hiram never denied his testimony of the Book of Mormon.
