David Whitmer’s gravesite is in the Richmond Cemetery. He is buried alongside his wife, Julie Ann Jolly Whitmer, and his son, David J. Whitmer. Inscriptions on the grave marker testify of the Book of Mormon and its eternal truths.
As one of the Three Witnesses, David Whitmer never denied his testimony of the Book of Mormon. After leaving Church activity and moving from Far West in 1838, David spent the rest of his life in Richmond, Missouri. There, he operated a livery stable and served as the mayor from 1867–1868. He died in Richmond on January 25, 1888.
There is a monument to the Three Witnesses, including David Whitmer, at the
Richmond Pioneer Cemetery, one mile (1.6km) northeast of the Richmond Cemetery.
