Competition Categories

  • Local History (1,000–3,000 words, or 10–20 minutes of audio or video recording). Introduce the history of the Church in a particular locale such as a town or region, or in a particular place such as a building or sacred site. How long has it existed? What has life been like for members over the years? If available, pictures are welcome. Include notes and a bibliography.
  • Personal or Family History Narrative (1,000–3,000 words, or 10–20 minutes of audio or video recording). Tell a nonfiction story from the history of the Latter-day Saints that has a personal connection to you. It can be about an individual, family, event, tradition, journey, or other topic. Include a bibliography.
  • Rising Generation History Project (1,000–3,000 words, or 10–20 minutes of audio or video recording). Doctrine and Covenants 69:8 tells us that Church history is meant “for the rising generations.” Young storytellers are encouraged to explore and share Latter-day Saint history by documenting local stories, conducting oral histories, or researching stories of inspiring pioneers from their home country. Participants must be 16–26 years old. If you are under 18, you must include a signed permission with your submission.
  • Academic Research Article (5,000–8,000 words). Build on existing scholarship and your own original research and thinking to shed new light on an aspect of Church history in your region. Include notes and a bibliography.
